Welcome to Year 2
We are really looking forward to teaching your children this year. Mrs Dunt is going to be teaching 2D this year with help from Miss Turner as her Teaching Assistant. Miss Blair is going to be teaching 2B this year with help from Mrs Brooker as her Teaching Assistant. Mrs Woolf is also going to be helping in Year 2 across both classes as an additional teacher. Miss Thorton will be working in 2D on Thursday and 2B on Friday.
Topics for the Term
Our topic this term is ‘The toys are back in town’ and next term we will be learning with the topic ‘Winter around the World’. The children will be learning about old and new toys by comparing what they are made of and how they have changed.
In our Winter topic, we will be learning how other countries and other people celebrate or don’t celebrate Christmas.
In our Maths, we are consolidating our knowledge of numers 0 to 20, including how to spell the number words. We will be using numbers to 100 through tens and ones, money, addition and subtraction. Counting in 2s. 5s and 10s will be a starting point for times tables. We will be learning to measure and use graphs and charts to find out and read information.
English will focus on simple sentences using capital letters, conjunctions, adjectives, full stops and question marks. Emphasis will be put on letter formation, always starting on the line to lead in and lead out. This often naturally leads their handwriting to join and become fully cursive. We will be reading a variety of stories connected to our topics. It is important for children to be read to; a bedtime story is a valuable way of sharing vocabulary, and by asking questions, it shows how much your child understands. It is also a way to reconnect with your child and spend some quality time together too.
Indoor PE: Wednesday Morning. Outdoor PE: Friday Afternoon
For Outdoor P.E. the children will need trainers and a tracksuit including a warm jacket, especially as the weather turns colder in Term 2. For Indoor PE, please pack a pair of plimsolls and socks, just in case your child is wearing tights on the day! Davington kits are available at the school office. Please ensure children with shoulder length hair or longer have their hair tied back or have a hair tie ready for the lesson. If your child has pierced ears, their earrings will need to be removed before this session. Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in a suitable bag and labelled clearly with their full name and class.
All children need to be read with regularly at home. If you hear your child read, please write in their reading record book. There are rewards to collect for children who have read three times a week at home, consistently. The children will have the opportunity to change their books throughout the week.
The children will be given their group spelling words to learn on a Friday. They will have a short spelling quiz on the following Friday. A homework task will be set each week too, to be handed in on a Friday unless otherwise stated. This will begin on Friday 17th September and will be accessible through TEAMs. Please let your class teacher know if you have any problems setting up TEAMs or accessing assignments. Your logins will be the same as last year.
We will visit the library each week. The children are allowed to choose one book to share with you at home. Once they have finished enjoying the book, please return it to school so they can choose another storybook. There will be a ‘returns’ box for the children to use.
It is important that children drink plenty of water throughout the day. In order to do this, please provide your child with a named water bottle that they can use during the day. Please make sure this does not leak and has a ‘sports top’ lid. These can be bought in the school office. The children are strongly encouraged to drink water, not squash.
Break Time Snacks
Key Stage One children are currently offered a piece of fruit every break time. This will be continuing this year. If you would rather provide your child with their own snack, please refer to the Parent Handbook for guidance as we like to ensure that we are promoting healthy eating within the school.
Arriving at school
We have an ‘open door’ policy and are always ready to discuss any urgent problems with you in the morning when you bring your child to school. However, if you want to have a longer discussion about your child, please make an appointment to talk to us after school – thank you.
Collecting your child
At the end of the school day your child will be taken to their designated area on the playground. The children are instructed to remain with school staff until they see the adult responsible for collecting them and a member of staff has approved. It would be helpful for staff if you could give us a wave when you see your child as this will help us learn your faces. Arriving on time is extremely important. Please ensure that the class teacher or the office is aware if someone else is collecting your child. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
